Even though the MPC One sits at the lowest price point, the whole MPC series doesn’t necessarily conform to the ‘good, better, best’ model. It’s a cheaper alternative to both, but by no means sacrifices functionality for affordability. The Akai MPC One is sort of a hybrid between Akai’s very popular MPC Live and X units. In this MPC One review, we’ll break down Akai’s affordable sequencer and sampling workstation. Renowned for their influence on hip hop and electronic music, today’s workstations share DNA with their predecessors, with upgrades suited for modern digital recording. Roger Linn, who developed the popular LM-1 drum machine in 1980, designed the earliest MPCs. Originally named MIDI Production Center (now Music Production Center), Akai introduced the first model, the MPC60, in 1988. The obvious window for launch would probably be around NAMM in April, but if we catch wind of anything else in the meantime, we’ll let you know.Akai Professional’s long-running MPC series is one of the most recognized sampling workstations ever made. And let’s go for an optimistic 16GB of RAM and a whopping TB of internal storage. It will probably be the MPC X with the odd extra bolted into the firmware. So it’s unlikely that we’re going to be seeing some revolutionary new idea. But there was very little change to the hardware.
That would have been a big thing at the time when memory was at a bit more of a premium. Previous XL versions tended to focus on upgrading the internal memory. Since then, Akai has mixed between standalone machines and software-based controllers, but it does feel that the time is right for an upgrade to the MPC X. It’s a fully standalone production studio, the likes of which we hadn’t seen since the 20. Along with the MPC Live it marked a return to the behemoth machines of the classic MPCs of their heyday. Anything else at this point is pure speculation.
